We are the World’s Leading Aviation Integrated Modelling Team

Aviation is a complex system, in which changes in inputs can lead to unexpected outcomes. For example, higher fuel prices incentivise airlines to increase their airfares, reduce their flight frequencies, offer more indirect routes, and rejuvenate their aircraft fleets. However, these network modifications and the mitigating effect of more fuel-efficient aircraft on airfare mean that traffic may not decrease as much as a simple model would predict. This rebound effect offsets the initial demand reduction at least in part.

Similarly, capacity expansions at one airport can lead to increased flight frequencies, reduced airfares, increased passenger demand, and higher environmental impacts at competing airports. These and other non-linear system responses, building upon complex interactions between competing industry stakeholders and passenger behaviour, require a novel approach. Our one-of-their-kind models capture these effects at different levels of resolution, with a minimum number of assumptions.
